Step Up Your Safety for Youth
Step Up Your Safety lays the foundation for confidence, awareness, and the courage to speak up.
This program offers parents, teachers and employers an opportunity to help cultivate safer, more self-aware young workers by teaching youth their legal rights, safety responsibilities and how to confidently advocate for themselves and others.
Delivered through four video-based modules with built-in comprehension questions and a certificate of completion, Step Up Your Safety for Youth introduces essential themes like respect, speaking up, trusting your gut, and asking questions. It helps young people recognize that they’re not invincible, and that awareness is the first step to staying safe from day one
if you're a PARENT
- Offer to your child and ask to see their certificate. You can even go through it together.
- Check in with the young worker in your life: ask them if their employer has provided job specific training. Ask them if they feel safe speaking up.
- Remind them that no job is worth getting hurt or killed over.
- Encourge them to tune into and trust their gut.
if you're an EMPLOYER
- Ask new applicants if they HAVE the certificate - this places value on their initiative to empower themselves!
- Incorporate this as the first step in laying the foundation for the job specific training that follows.
- Use the videos in toolbox talks or safety meetings to spark discusson around speaking up, rights and responsibiltys, communication, and psychological safety.
